THE BEAR STATE STATEHOOD: A HISTORY

California's journey to statehood was a protracted one, marked by numerous developments. Initially part of Mexico, California was annexed by the United States in 1848 following the Mexican-American War. However, its entrance to the Union was not a smooth process. Political groups within California had contrasting views on a number of issues, inclu
